QUICKSHOT, a new sci-fi romance coming from Pippa Jay on March 31st! This gem is already available for pre-order.
Sal, a legal carrier (just about) of whatever comes her way, puts her trust in just two things: her guns.
Keeping out from under Imperium eyes—especially those belonging to a certain Ehi Wahu—while making a living, and trying to keep a lover who can tolerate her twitchy trigger fingers, are the extent of her ambitions.
Then a kiss from a passing stranger, and a promise of the biggest score in a long time, tempt her. Devin fulfils more than one need, but he comes with more trouble than one woman can handle. And this time it’ll take more than her guns to save her. She’ll have to trust a man again.
“Ugh.” The groan slipped free as she pried herself from her saliva-soaked pillow. Her head was thumping hard, her stomach churning in protest as she struggled to wipe the drool from her face.
Adrenaline jolted through her like a zap from a stun gun. Bastard! He’d drugged her. Rage set her head pounding so hard she wished she could pass out again.
She staggered from her bed and up to the control deck. “Status, Bee?” she croaked.
“Status normal. We have docking permission for three days. All port fees, taxes and refueling costs are paid in full. We have priority clearance, and are space ready.”
“Whu… Who did that?”
“Devin Kyle.”
She slumped into her seat. It made no sense. If he’d drugged her to avoid paying the promised thirty thousand, how come all her bills were already paid? Fuck it. She shoved herself out of her chair, stormed down the corridor—and stopped dead at the open hatch. Three Imperium rezzers stood at the main entrance to the hangar in their shiny red and black uniforms. Her breathing stuttered, and she clutched her guns for support as the world dropped out from under her feet. Imperium officers. Nightmares of red and black, of pain and a small dark room.
She staggered backward until she could lean against the wall, sucking in deep breaths. What the hell would they be doing here, out of their jurisdiction on some fringe space station?
She peered around the edge of the hatch, pulling her guns free. They weren’t looking at her ship, but keeping a watch on anyone coming into the hangar. So, they were waiting to catch someone trying to leave the station? Whatever. She wasn’t going to risk bringing herself to the Imperium’s attention over Devin Kyle.
“Bee, clear us to leave and get us out of here.”
“Confirmed.”
